What is Muse?

from wiki: The Muses (Ancient Greek ?? ??????, hai mo?sai [1]: perhaps from the o-grade of the Proto-Indo-European root *men- "think"[2]) in Greek mythology, poetry, and literature are the goddesses or spirits who inspire the creation of literature and the arts. They were considered the source of the knowledge, related orally for centuries in the ancient culture, that was contained in poetic lyrics and myths. In Boeotia, the homeland of Hesiod, a tradition persisted[3] that the Muses had once been three in number. Diodorus Siculus, quotes Hesiod to the contrary, observing: Writers similarly disagree also concerning the number of the Muses; for some say that they are three, and others that they are nine, but the number nine has prevailed since it rests upon the authority of the most distinguished men, such as Homer and Hesiod and others like them.[4] Three ancient Muses were also reported in Plutarch's Quaestiones Conviviviales (9.I4.2-4).[5] The Roman scholar Varro relates that there are only three Muses: one who is born from the movement of water, another who makes sound by striking the air, and a third, who is embodied only in the human voice. However the Classical understanding of the muses tripled their triad, set at nine goddesses, who embody the arts and inspire creation with their graces through remembered and improvised song and stage, writing, traditional music, and dance. read more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muse

OP Alpha Revisited

Summer 1979 I was 19. Na na na na na na nineteen. We were at war. Cold war. Newbies, as they called us, were required (!) to visit OP Alpha. Once there, we made use of the binoculars that were handed out. "Look very closely at what you see, Soldier! That over there, is the enemy. If he could kill you, he would. He doesn't give a shit about freedom or democracy. Look closely. Now you know why you are here." 31 years later, things have changed. I have changed. We have changed. The enemy has changed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Observation_Post_Alpha "Observation Post Alpha, OP Alpha or Point Alpha was a Cold War observation post between Rasdorf, Hesse, West Germany and Geisa, Thuringia, East Germany. The post overlooked the Fulda Gap, which would have been a prime invasion route had the Cold War erupted into actual warfare. The "Point Alpha" memorial commemorates its forty-year existence, and was dedicated to keep it and a section of East German wall as reminders of German division and the confrontation of NATO and the Warsaw Pact in the Cold War." http://www.itcwebdesigns.com/tour_germany/point_alpha01.htm Point Alpha is now a museum. The USA Army gone. The Russian Army, gone. The fences, gone. The wall, gone. Friedi: "wohin jetzt?" (where to now?) Curtis: "Richtung Moscow" (direction Moscow) Friedi: "Alter Haudegen!" (smart ass!) Curtis: "wat mut, dat mut" (what must, that must) We ended up in Eisenach where we dined at McDonalds. Wartburg. Martin Luther. Thuringer Bratwurst. McDonalds. Shit happens.
